Jorge M. Torres invests in startups and practices law in New York.   As part of the team at SILAS Capital, Jorge helps the firm discover and partner with exceptional founders who are building consumer brands and web-enabled services businesses looking for capital to drive growth. As an angel investor, he personally invests in newly-formed startups that are going to transform industries such as media, law, and healthcare.   Jorge’s investments include Modria, a startup that provides online dispute resolution technologies that businesses and municipalities use to settle customer problems rapidly, and DarkNet, a media company that is going to radically change the way people play games and tell stories online.   Jorge practiced intellectual property law for over a decade in a number of large law firms before entering the world of startups and early-stage investing. Today, he continues to counsel founders and investors alike on legal issues that touch on patents, trademarks, and copyrights as the founder of the Torres Venture Law Group.   A member of New York’s early-stage technology community, Jorge serves as a mentor at healthcare startup accelerator Blueprint Health, and he co-founded the LIC Tech Breakfast, a meetup for technology company founders who live and work in the New York City community of Long Island City. His past volunteer work has included serving as an advisor to the Organization of Latino Entrepreneurs, which supports and promotes the growth of Latino-owned businesses throughout the State of New York.    Jorge graduated from Yale University with a B.S. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and received a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2002. He is also a graduate of the Kauffman Fellows Program, an educational and training program dedicated to developing venture capital professionals and cultivating innovation in high-technology, high-growth, high-impact companies. During his fellowship, he founded Fundraising @ Kauffman, a community comprised of over 80 emerging fund managers globally who meet periodically to share knowledge and celebrate success as they raise first-time venture capital funds.
